John Myatt is the artist behind one of the UK's biggest art frauds. He discovered a talent for copying the work of famous artists at an early age and started painting 'genuine fakes'. A customer, John Drewe started buying his paintings and selling them on to auction houses and private customers as original works.
Drewe was the mastermind behind the operation and produced fake certificates of authenticity to accompany the pieces. Myatt knowingly supplied the paintings to Drewe, of which around 200 were put into circulation worldwide.
The pair were eventually convicted in 1995. Myatt was given a one year prison sentence but served only four months of it. Drewe was given six years but served two. It is estimated that Myatt made roughly £275 thousand for his part but the total profits exceeded 25 million EUR.
Currently we have on display one piece of Myatt's works for demonstration purposes only. We are happy to take commissions for a 'genuine fake' copy.
