About furniture designer Sebastian Blakeley
Sebastian Blakeley grew up in Cornwall after his artist parents moved there to be closer to the Arts movement. His primary school headmaster recognised his talent for practical skills and recommended that he go to a technically oriented school.
Throughout school he specialised in practical and creative skills, enjoying making laminated furniture and other pieces. He was offered a job working with a fine craftsman - he leapt at the chance and never looked back.
The following years were spent mastering cabinet making, period oak restoration, wood carving and wood turning. This experience became the foundations of running his own small business building bespoke furniture.
In 1985 Sebastian travelled to Italy where he found himself restoring a 13th Century farmhouse and as project manager, he worked with more than 50 young people from all over the world for three and a half years.
After the building project finished he stayed on as a designer, working his way around small family run Italian businesses, learning tubular steel works, brazing and welding, cast aluminium, mould making and leather masks.
Eventually, he began prototyping for a few furniture companies, which gave him the courage to start tackling the portfolio of designs he'd accumulated.
After being advised by several Italian companies in Milan that his work was 'too artisan', he made his way back to London, whereby he was told, you're too designer for London!'.
He began a business venture in West London with components manufactured in Italy and the pieces assembled in Italy. Sales were started through trade fairs and with a young family to look after, Sebastian began restoring historic properties in the UK and Spain, with a specialism in lime construction, hemp fibre and sustainable solutions.
Once settled back in Cornwall and into the present day his designs are the perfect high-end furnishing for contemporary and traditional homes.
Sebastian has a profound understanding and respect for wood, trees and forests, which he attributes to his initial years spent mastering traditional craftsmanship and restoration.
